The city spans both banks of the river, nestled between the Monashee Mountains to the west and the Selkirk Mountains to the east. As of the latest data, Trail has a population of around 8,250 residents. The city was named after the Dewdney Trail, which passed through the area. Initially known as Trail Creek or Trail Creek Landing, the name was shortened to Trail in 1897. Trail is renowned for its picturesque natural setting and offers a variety of outdoor activities year-round. The Columbia River provides opportunities for fishing, boating, and kayaking. The Columbia River Skywalk, one of the longest suspension bridges of its kind in North America, offers scenic views and is a popular spot for walking and cycling. Gyro Park, located along the river, is a favored gathering spot featuring a sandy beach, picnic areas, and a spray park for children. The Trail Riverfront Centre houses the Trail Museum & Archives, offering insights into the city's industrial roots and rich sports heritage. The facility also includes the Trail & District Public Library and serves as the Trail Visitor Centre. Trail is home to Teck Trail Operations, one of the world's largest fully integrated zinc and lead smelting and refining complexes. The city boasts outstanding recreational facilities, including the Trail Aquatic & Leisure Centre, which features a pool, fitness center, and various programs for all ages.
